National Police Confirm Arrest of Two Opposition Activists by Thai Authorities

PHNOM PENH: National Police spokesman Chhay Kimkhoeun told EAC News that two former opposition activists, Voeung Samnang and Voeun Veasna (aka Prey Lang KroNhong), were arrested by Thai authorities and will be sent back to Cambodia because they had been illegally living in Thailand.

The two Illegal immigrants will be deported back to the Kingdom and will go straight to prison before facing a lawsuit.

Mr. Voeun Veasna is wanted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court since 2 May, 2021 on charges of obstructing the implementation of measures and inciting serious social unrest, under the Law on Measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Last month, Voeun Veasna has posted a post on Prime Minister’s Facebook page in an immoral and violent language.

The PM has stated that this kind of actions must be completely eliminated. The ideology and activities of extremist groups cause this kind of exertion. He has reminded that he has disbanded a Khmer Rouge political and military organization that has made Cambodia as peaceful and prosperous as it is today. Now there are extremist rebels who need to be stop in order for peace to be maintained.

Voeung Samnang and Voeung Veasna were arrested by Thai police on Monday night in Bangkok, Thailand. Exiled opposition member Eng Chai Eang wrote on Facebook that the arrests by Thai authorities were a violation of the UNHCR-recognized refugee rights in the Kingdom of Thailand. However, National Police spokesman Chhay Kim Khoeun has said the two men were staying illegally in Thailand and were not with the refugees group.
